The Art of Slow Living
I guess, for me, slow living means first of all really noticing what is around you and seeing the magic in the world. All those tiny details that can be so easily missed—the way a root curls around a tree, sunshine and shadow though leaves, layer upon layer of stars in the sky the longer that you look. I also think it encompasses being mindful of the choices that we make and our impact, positive or negative, on the world and people around us.
Favorite Bloom
I love forget-me-nots (no surprise!) and a little known fact about them is that in medieval folklore they were thought to be a “key flower” that could be used to provide a way into secret caverns where buried treasure lay.
Wild Flowers
I much prefer flowers growing wild to a cultivated garden. Nothing beats clusters of primroses to signal the beginning of spring, the incredible sight of a carpet of bluebells in a shady wood or a tangled rose growing wild up an old stone wall.
Favorite Authors
I tend to read a mix of classic and modern literary fiction with a leaning towards female authors. I would say that Jane Eyre and Dracula are my favorite “classic” books, but I love Daphne du Maurier, Kate Atkinson, Donna Tartt, Shirley Jackson, Susan Fletcher, Tessa Hadley and Jane Gardam. Absolute favorite books recently would have to be A Little Life, Birdsong, East of Eden, and All the Light We Cannot See.
